Nagoya University Gallery – GO Exhibition

My foreign exchange trip to Japan culminated in an exhibition at the Nagoya University Gallery. My whole project was about exploring what the Japanese supermarket revealed about the wider culture. I chose to hand make all the multiples because I like the idea of having ‘mass-produced’, yet hand made pieces, and all the slight differences each rendition has.

Coffee Cartons

Pre-mixed coffee in a carton is a concept some westerners would be appalled with, but in Japan it is part of daily life. On my travels, I was bemused to discover the idea of cold coffee already mixed with milk and sugar – so I decided to document it as a unique cultural artefact of Japan.

Coffee Cans

Japan runs on coffee. The modern obsession with coffee in Japan really began in 1965 when Mira Coffee released the first canned coffee. These fitted effortlessly into Japans already popular vending machines, where the busy salary man might stop and buy a ¥100 pick-me-up in the form of a Boss Coffee. I felt that coffee cans were an excellent representation of Japanese culture.
